Umag, Croatia

Welcome to Istria, Slovenia

“The best kept secret in Europe between Dubrovnik and Venice”

Umag's rise as a popular tourist destination in Croatia should come as no surprise. The scenic Istrian city along the Adriatic Coast holds unmatched beauty and distinction. Due to its location in northwest Croatia, Umag is considered the gateway to Istria from northern Europe. Upon arriving in the city, you notice its splendour immediately. The sight of lush landscape is endless and the scent of the Adriatic Sea is in the air. Instantly, you know you are in a special place. With a coastline filled with stunning beaches, Umag has solidified itself as an established summer destination in Europe. But the sea is only one of the reasons Umag stands out as an exceptional vacation site. Beautiful architecture, delicious restaurants and unrivalled scenery add to the city's undeniable charm. Umag's growth over the years is evident as it is now a major tourist destination in Istria. The old town of Umag is a perfect place to begin a sightseeing voyage. Look for remnants of centuries-old architecture, including the old town walls, which date to the 10th century. Walk along the narrow cobbled streets to find the Museum of Umag, which is located in a well-preserved structure that was once used a defence tower in ancient times. A tour of the museum, which is home to a valuable collection of artefacts, will lend an idea of what Umag resembled centuries ago.

Food

No holiday in Umag would be complete without experiencing the tastes of its wonderful Istrian food. Due to its prime location, Umag offers both delicacies from the sea and traditional fare from the region. Fish, crab and clams, among many others, are plentiful in the clear water of the Adriatic. These fruits of the sea are often prepared in traditional Istrian style, which makes for a memorable dining experience.

One of the most popular foods in the region is Istrian ham, or prosciutto. This dried ham has been a staple of Istrian cuisine for centuries. The ham is prepared in a unique fashion, using only fresh air to cure the meat, resulting in supreme texture and flavour. Served with cheese and bread, Istrian ham is perfect for an appetizer before your meal or as the main dish itself.

With such fertile land and an ideal climate, Istria offers delicious tastes throughout the year. The freshest asparagus is plentiful in the spring and truffle season arrives in the autumn. As a delicacy, truffles are held in high regard around the world and the very best can be found in Istria.

Also, the Istria's perfect growing conditions for olives, truffles and grapes are evident when sampling the region's world famous olive oils, truffles and wines.
